How to get more range out of your Tesla: Charge Drive EV tips

How to get more range out of your Tesla

October 17, 2026•2 min read

Range anxiety is mostly habit anxiety. A few small changes and you'll be surprised how far a charge goes.

Real numbers from our fleet: our standard-range Model Ys (LFP batteries) show a rated 374–397 km at 100%. In real-world driving, three of them averaged 152–186 Wh/km over thousands of km, which works out to roughly 290–360 km per full charge. Our standard-range Model 3s show a rated 363–388 km. Your range depends on speed, weather and your right foot, which is what the tips below are about.

1. Check your tyre pressures

EVs are heavy, and soft tyres quietly eat range. Pump them up to the pressure on the door-jamb placard (check them cold), and do it weekly.

2. Ease off on the highway

Air resistance climbs fast as speed goes up. Sitting a touch under the limit on a long run can noticeably stretch your range.

3. Precondition while you're plugged in

Cool (or warm) the cabin from the app before you leave. That energy comes from the wall, not your battery.

4. Drive smoothly and let regen work

Smooth take-offs, and ease off early before lights and corners. Regenerative braking puts energy back in. Harsh braking just makes heat.

5. Ditch the roof racks when you're not using them

Empty bars and roof boxes add drag every kilometre.

6. Try Chill mode

It softens acceleration. That's easier on the battery, the tyres and your passengers.

7. Use seat heating before cabin heating

On the odd chilly Brisbane morning, heated seats use less energy than heating the whole cabin.

8. Use the car's trip planner

It factors in charging stops and warms the battery before Supercharging.

9. Don't carry junk

Extra weight costs range, especially in stop-start traffic.

10. Charge smart, not full

Set the daily charge limit the car recommends, and only go higher for road trips. More on that in our battery care guide.
